Open Hands Support Centre is a Christian non-profit organisation (NPO Reg. No. 221-362) based in Southernwood, East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
We exist to be a small, steady place of welcome for vulnerable and abused men who need somewhere safe to recover their footing and begin again.
Founded in 2019 by East London resident and director Trevor Willard, Open Hands grew out of a simple concern: too many men were suffering quietly – ashamed to speak about abuse, trauma, or homelessness, and unsure where to turn for help. From those early beginnings, the Centre has developed into a dedicated home where men can step out of crisis, be listened to, and start rebuilding their lives with dignity.
In 2025 the Centre relaunched in new premises at 48 St James Road, Southernwood, following a brief hiatus to secure a more suitable home. The move marked a renewed commitment to serve men in the Buffalo City / East London area and to provide a calm, structured environment rather than just a bed for the night.
Open Hands welcomes adult men of all ages and backgrounds, whether or not they have a church connection. Many of the men we support are living with the after-effects of domestic or workplace abuse, relationship breakdown, loss of employment, or long-term homelessness. Some also struggle with addiction, but our primary work is not formal drug rehabilitation – it is to offer safety, stability, and a pathway back to ordinary life through consistent care and accountable community.
A small on-site team works closely with trusted local counsellors, community organisations, and churches to provide one-to-one support, practical planning, and encouragement. Over time, residents are helped to regain confidence, restore relationships where possible, and move towards independent living. Our hope is that men who arrive as victims of circumstance will leave with renewed purpose, stronger support networks, and the assurance that they no longer have to face their struggles alone.
A stable, caring home for men in crisis. We provide clean accommodation, meals, and daily routines that restore order, dignity, and peace of mind.
Each resident receives compassionate guidance and counselling. Working with trusted local partners like Masithethe, our on-site counsellor helps men face trauma, rebuild confidence, and find hope again.
We help residents prepare for employment, rebuild skills, and reconnect with family and community. The goal is a fresh start—independent, confident, and contributing once more.
